In 1932 Boy Scouts of America Troop 27 of the Sonoma-Mendocino Area Council was established under the leadership of scoutmaster affectionately known as “Scoutmaster Frank”. The Troop flourished for many years completing can and newspaper drives to support the war effort in the 1940’s. The Troop attended meetings in the “Quonset huts” in the center of Sebastopol as well as camp-outs along the Russian River and the throughout the Laguna de la Santa Rosa.
The Sebastopol VFW sponsored the Troop until the mid 1960’s followed by the Gravenstein Lion Club who still supports the Troop today. Over the years nearly 400 boys have grown up with the Troop and have learned leadership, outdoor skills, community service and strong character. Of those boys 40+ scouts went on to obtain the highest rank of Eagle Scout.
Today Troop 27 has expanded and includes a Pack of Cubs (Pack 27) and a High Adventure Crew (Crew 27) that boast of 50 mile hikes on the John Muir Trail and Tahoe National Forest, white water rafting on the American, Russian and Rouge Rivers and cycling in the Mable Mountains. During the year the Troop may be found camping in Northern California, canoeing the Russian River or camping in one of the councils camps at Noyo or Navarro. The troop serves our community with American Flag placement on national holidays, honoring our countries Veterans on Memorial Day and assisting the Cancer Society with a local Relay for Life.
